Nicaraguan police say a Chilean photographer working for the French news agency Agence France-Presse has been deported because he entered a restricted area near President Daniel Ortega's office.

Police spokesman Fernando Borges says photographer Hector Retamal violated a security cordon around the presidential residence and was detained last Tuesday. Authorities say Retamal was found to be in violation of immigration rules and he was deported to Costa Rica on Saturday.

Retamal was covering a meeting between Ortega and Palestinian Authority foreign minister Riad Malki.

AFP says it has protested the Nicaraguan government's treatment of Retamal, who was held incommunicado after his detention.
