Firefighters are battling an apparent engine fire on a Korean Air jet on the tarmac at Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

Japanese television showed live Friday at least two fire trucks spraying what appeared to be a white foam on an engine on the left side of the plane as smoke came out the back of it.

The passengers and crew appeared to have been safely evacuated, and one live broadcast showed a large crowd of people away from the runway with the choppy waters of Tokyo Bay in the background. Emergency chutes could be seen deployed from the plane's doors.

The plane was preparing for takeoff when the incident occurred, according to Japanese media reports.
