The Israeli military says soldiers shot a Palestinian man to death after he fired an "improvised weapon" at a bus stop in the West Bank. Israeli police said he was launching fireworks.

The military said Thursday's incident occurred at a checkpoint in the northern West Bank. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said security forces are searching the area for other explosive devices.

The violence comes as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is shuttling between Israel and the Palestinians in a bid to revive faltering peace talks.

Recent months have seen an uptick of deadly violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank.
