JERUSALEM – Israeli police say a security guard has shot and killed a Palestinian who charged toward him with a knife at a West Bank crossing.
Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says Tuesday's incident took place at the Qalandia crossing north of Jerusalem.
The shooting is the latest in a year-long wave of violence. Palestinian attackers have killed 36 Israelis and two visiting Americans in stabbings, shootings and car ramming attacks. Also, 225 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during the same period.
Israel says most of the Palestinians killed were attackers while the rest died in clashes with troops. Israel says the violence is driven by a Palestinian campaign of incitement. The Palestinians say it's the result of nearly 50 years of Israeli occupation and dwindling hopes for an independent state.
