Iraqi Governor Escapes Bombing of His Convoy

BAGHDAD-- Iraqi officials say a roadside bomb exploded near a convoy carrying the governor of a northern province but no one was injured in the bombing.

A police official and an official from Ninevah Gov. Atheel al-Nujaifi's office said the bomb exploded as the governor's convoy was traveling from Mosul, where the governor is based, to Baghdad on Monday.

The officials said some of the armored vehicles in the convoy were slightly damaged but there were no injuries.

The blast happened about 60 miles south of Mosul.

Violence in Iraq is nowhere near the peak it hit just a few years ago but government officials are still targeted in bombings and shootings.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
