Iran's Revolutionary Guard begins military exercises near strategic strait

The drill, named Great Prophet 9, was the first to involve a replica of a U.S. carrier. Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, the spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said they were monitoring the drills, but downplayed the simulated attack on the carrier, saying the U.S. military was "not concerned about this exercise."(AP Photo/Iran state television via AP video) TV OUT (The Associated Press)

Iran's Revolutionary Guard has begun large-scale naval and air defense drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

State TV showed the Guard's speedboats swarming a replica of a U.S. aircraft carrier and a drone being shot down. It showed the firing of four missiles, three of which hit the carrier.

The drill, named Great Prophet 9, was held near the Strait of Hormuz, a major international waterway through which one fifth of the world's oil passes. Iran's regular army carried out naval drills near the strait in December.

Iran and world powers are currently negotiating a final agreement over the country's contested nuclear program.
