Indian, Pakistani forces trade heavy gunfire, killing 1 civilian, wounding 18 others

An Indian official says at least on civilian was killed as Indian and Pakistani troops traded heavy cross-border fire between Indian-held Kashmir and Pakistan.

Police officer K. Rajendran says the bullet and mortar exchange also left 18 civilians wounded on the Indian side.

There was no immediate information Wednesday about casualties on the Pakistani side.

The violence is one of the worst violations of a 2003 cease-fire between India and Pakistan. While minor skirmishes have been somewhat common over the years, this week's fighting over the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha that left civilian casualties was unexpected.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars for control over Kashmir since they won independence from Britain in 1947.
