Honduras authorities report plot by drug gangs to kill congressman, journalist, police chief

The leader of Honduras' congress says police have uncovered a plot by drug gangs to assassinate a lawmaker, a police chief and a television reporter in the next few months.

Congress President Juan Hernandez says the government is providing armored vehicles and bodyguards to the three men.

Hernandez said Monday that investigators discovered the plot while gathering intelligence on a wave of violence that has killed several people, including Honduras' top anti-money-laundering prosecutor who was shot to death last week.

Hernandez didn't give any other details of the plot or say whether police have made any arrests.

With a homicide rate of 91 per 100,000 residents, Honduras is often called the most violent country in the world. Prosecutors solve only about 20 percent of homicide cases.
