Congo military says it killed 230 rebels from Ugandan group ADF

The Congo government spokesman says the country's military has killed more than 200 rebels in an offensive against a Uganda-based group.

Lambert Mende said Friday that the death toll from a month of fighting had totaled 230 men from the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group, known as ADF, and 22 members of the Congolese military.

Mende also said the Congolese soldiers had destroyed the group's headquarters during the offensive.

ADF rebels are active in Congo's volatile east and were blamed for a massacre in December that killed at least 21 people.

The ADF group was formed in the 1990s by Muslims who felt sidelined by the policies of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
