A military official says armed men have killed two colonels in an ambush in volatile eastern Congo.

Army spokesman Col. Sylvain Ekenge said Monday that the two colonels were conducting operations in the town of Walikale. He did not say who the culprits might be. He said the military is investigating the incident and has sent a delegation because the attack happened in a remote area without phone access.

Ekenge says the colonels' bodies are on their way to the provincial capital of Goma.

Eastern Congo has long been wracked by violence from a myriad of rebel groups, including some that are based in neighboring Rwanda and Uganda.
