Authorities on the Caribbean island of Nevis have dropped charges against a gardener accused in the February 2012 robbery of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.
Gardener Vedel Browne has been free on $37,000 bail since shortly after the robbery. He has told the St. Kitts & Nevis Observer that he is innocent and will seek compensation.
A machete-wielding robber broke into Breyer's vacation home and stole $1,000 from the judge and his guests. No one was injured.

Police told reporters Friday that they have asked to have the charge withdrawn. Officials do not say why, and police and prosecutors have not returned calls seeking comment.
Last month, a judge asked police when they would bring the preliminary inquiry before court. Police said then that they were working on it.
