Brazil's World Cup revenue from tourists boomed _ but Brazilians spent even more abroad

Brazil's Central Bank says spending by foreign tourists shot up 60 percent during the two months overlapped by its hosting of the World Cup, reaching nearly $1.59 billion.

But the bank's Friday report says Brazilians themselves spent even more abroad — $4.4 billion during June and July.

The bank says tourists in Brazil spent $797 million in June and $789 million in July. Bank economic department chief Tulio Maciel he expects tourists will spend $100 million in August.

The $2.41 billion that Brazilians spent abroad in July was the highest for any month since 1947, when the bank started compiling such figures.
