RIO DE JANEIRO – News reports say Brazil's finance minister has backtracked on plans to possibly delay the implementation of a law requiring automakers to install frontal air bags and anti-locking braking systems in all news cars.
G1 internet portal quotes Guido Mantega as saying Tuesday the new law will take effect next year as planned.
Last week, Mantega said the government was studying delaying the implementation "by one or two years" over concerns the safety features could push up the prices of cars in Brazil.
Safety advocates decried the idea, saying that in terms of safety, Brazilian cars are already decades behind those produced for consumers in the U.S. and Europe.
An Associated Press investigation earlier this year found Brazilians die at four times the rate as Americans in passenger car wrecks.
