Austrian Chancellor Faymann resigns, citing lack of support
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann has resigned citing lack of support for him in his Social Democratic party.
The Austria Press Agency cited a statement from Faymann announcing his resignation. The decision comes less than two weeks after his party's candidate came second-last in the first round of elections for the Austrian presidency. That vote was won by the right wing Freedom Party candidate who received nearly four times the support from the electorate.
The election results come after a series of losses in provincial elections by the Social Democrats, who have dominated Austrian politics along with the centrist People's Party since World War II. The People's Party has suffered similar losses.
