Afghan police chief says Green Village compound housing foreigners in Kabul under attack

A senior Afghan police officer says that a compound housing foreigners on the outskirts of the capital, Kabul, is under attack.

A huge explosion was heard Wednesday at the gate of Green Village, which houses foreigners working for international service contractors.

Kabul's chief of police, Gen. Mohammand Zahir, says shooting could be heard from inside the compound.

He says that the area has been surrounded by security forces.

It is the second attack on a foreign compound in Kabul in recent days. Insurgent activity has intensified in the months since President Ashraf Ghani was inaugurated as president and ahead of the withdrawal of foreign forces at the end of the year.
