The chief of the South San Francisco Police Department says an officer who was struck on the head with a skateboard during a confrontation with a suspect is in critical condition after surgery.

Chief Jeff Azzopardi told a press conference Friday that the officer was knocked unconscious and suffered traumatic head injuries in the attack Thursday afternoon. The officer had responded to reports of a man acting aggressively.
The injured officer's name has not been released. The chief says he is a 12-year veteran of the force who is married and has two children.
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer.

The South San Francisco Police Department says one of its officers was struck on the head with a skateboard and critically injured during a pursuit.

A department statement released early Friday said the officer was in surgery.
The officer pursued the man Thursday afternoon when a citizen reported someone was causing a disturbance.
Police say the suspect fled on the skateboard and then turned and used it to knock the officer unconscious. Another officer arrested the man.

The injured officer's name has not been released. A telephone message seeking further information on the officer's condition was left with the Police Department.
