Authorities say a robbery suspect who carjacked a truck and took the driver hostage is dead in a shootout with police.

The Journal & Courier in Lafayette, Indiana, (http://on.jconline.com/1acmYNk ) reports that State Police Sgt. Kim Riley says it began in Watseka, Illinois. After the robbery and carjacking, the suspect fled into Indiana.

Lafayette police Lt. Brad Hayworth says authorities believe he then robbed a payday loan office.

The suspect led police on multiple chases, stealing vehicles whenever police used stopped sticks on whatever car he was in.

He was finally stopped in Monon, Indiana.

Police say officers approached a stolen minivan and the gunman opened fire. Police then killed the suspect.

Riley said the hostage was with him throughout the ordeal and was treated and released for injuries.
