Police say a man suspected of randomly attacking four people with a hammer has been arrested after he struck a New York officer with the tool and was shot.

The New York Police Department said Thursday that 30-year-old David Baril of the Bronx faces assault and weapon charges.

Baril remains in critical but stable condition. He was shot at least twice.

Police say surveillance video shows Baril lunging at the officer with a hammer Wednesday, striking her at least three times. Her partner shot him.

Police say he struck four other people with a hammer Monday.

Manhattan Chief of Detectives Bill Aubry says Baril has a history of paranoia and schizophrenia and voluntarily left a mental institution in December.

Information on his attorney was not immediately available.
