A proposal to build a backcountry hut in New Hampshire's White Mountains is sparking a debate.
The Appalachian Mountain Club wants to build a new hut offering bunks and part-time meal services in a section of Crawford Notch. It would less than 2 miles into the woods.
The club says the hut would make the region more accessible to older people or beginners. And it would also provide another option to through-hikers when conditions are tougher.

Opponents complain the proposed hut would ruin the outdoor experience and potentially damage pristine wilderness. The club says they're aware of those concerns and evaluating other locations, but a new proposal won't happen until the fall.
