An official says a military aircraft has gone off a runway at Naval Air Station North Island and into San Diego Bay.

Lee Swanson, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, says the incident occurred Friday.

KGTV-TV San Diego published a photograph of a downed aircraft in the bay's shallow waters.

Swanson referred all questions to the military. Navy spokesman Kevin Dixon says authorities were collecting information and declined additional comment.
