NY officer detained in India on weapons count; city officials cite forgotten bullets in pocket

New York City police officials say an officer is being detained in India on a weapons charge because he had three bullets in his luggage.

The New York Police Department confirmed on Friday that Officer Manny Encarnacion was arrested in New Delhi on March 11.

The department says he was arrested after the bullets were discovered in his luggage. Police officials say he had put the bullets in a coat pocket while at the NYPD shooting range and forgot they were there.

The officials say that the 49-year-old Encarnacion has been barred from leaving India until the case is resolved. They say they're working with the State Department to try to get him freed.

His next court date is April 17.
