Mass. boy, 10, charged with manslaughter in fire that killed 2 relatives, including 6-year-old

HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a 10-year-old Massachusetts boy with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly starting a fire that killed two relatives, including a 6-year-old boy.

A not guilty plea was entered for the boy Monday in Lawrence Juvenile Court. His name was not released because of his age.

Prosecutors say the boy used a lighter to start the fire in his Haverhill (HAY'-vruhl) home in November 2008. The blaze killed 50-year-old Mary Pina and first-grader Daquon Davis.

A spokesman for the Essex district attorney's office says charges are being brought to ensure the boy gets the treatment he needs.

The boy's lawyer, Janice Bassil, says she thinks the district attorney's intentions are good, but her client is too young to understand the legal proceedings.
