Florida deputies fatally shoot gun-wielding man

Sheriff's deputies near Tampa, Florida, fatally shot a man they say ran toward them, pointing what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon at them.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon says in a news release that 27-year-old Jeffery Casale was screaming and waving the gun outside his apartment Tuesday night. He refused orders to drop the weapon. One deputy tried to calm Casale by talking with him.

McKinnon says they started first aid until he could be taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The deputies will be placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.

McKinnon says investigators are reviewing Casale's prior history with law enforcement, as well as previous 911 calls from his house.

Casale was white. The names and races of the deputies haven't been released.
