The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for a man who went missing in the waters south of San Francisco after he headed into the surf for a quick swim.
Officer Mark Leahey says friends of the 22-year-old man called for help Sunday afternoon after he disappeared following a game of football on Roosevelt Beach near Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay.
The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and a rescue boat crew to join crews from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department and Pillar Point Harbormaster.
