2 men get year in jail for causing 2007 Malibu wildfire that destroyed dozens of homes

Two men have been sentenced to a year in jail each for causing a 2007 Malibu wildfire that destroyed 53 homes, damaged 23 others and forced thousands of evacuations.

Brian Anderson and William Coppock were sentenced Thursday. They will get credit for 200 days already spent in jail.

They also must apologize to victims and firefighters and pay restitution, which has yet to be determined but includes $7.7 million in firefighting costs.

Los Angeles County prosecutors say they were among five men who were partying in a Malibu-area cave and left an illegal bonfire whose embers ignited the fire.

They pleaded no contest to recklessly causing a fire with great bodily injury and recklessly causing a fire to an inhabited structure.

A third man got probation. Misdemeanor cases against two others are pending.
