FAIRFAX, Va. – Sen. John Warner was admitted to a suburban Washington hospital Tuesday to correct an irregular heartbeat, his office said in a news release.
According to the statement, "a second, routine procedure" will be performed Wednesday and doctors expect Warner, 80, will be home for the weekend and return to work next week.
The Virginia Republican announced Aug. 31 that he will not seek a sixth term in 2008. He said at the time that he still felt spry enough to handle the rigors of the Senate but thought it wise not to push it another six years.
The news release from Warner's office said the senator came to work Tuesday and handled some appointments before going to the Capitol physician's office mid-morning. He returned to his office for additional meetings, then left in the afternoon for an appointment at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
At the hospital, Warner had a procedure to correct atrial fibrillation — an abnormal heartbeat. According to the American Heart Association, about 2.2 million Americans have atrial fibrillation, and the chances of getting the disorder increase with age.
