The mayor of Liverpool has died after being hit by a train in what Brazoria County authorities say appears to be a suicide.

Brazoria County Sheriff's investigator Jimmy Miller says the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. called about 4 a.m. Saturday and reported a train had struck a man lying on the tracks.

The train's engineer told investigators he spotted 42-year-old Mike Peters and tried to stop. The engineer also blew the train's whistle, but Peters didn't get off the tracks.

Investigators say Peters was in a family argument before he died and may have been intoxicated.

The Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office will determine an official cause of death.

Peters became mayor about four years ago.
