Severe Georgia Storms Damage 100 Homes, Trap Residents
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Johnston Elementary School in Cherokee County is closed for classes Wednesday and serving as a command post after severe storms damaged buildings in north Georgia.
County officials say about 100 homes in the area were damaged late Tuesday afternoon. No injuries have been reported.
Sheriff's Department detention officer Phylecia Brown said Heard County escaped with little damage, but debris countywide forced the closing of all its schools.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The storms came amid tornado warnings from the National Weather Service, but a twister has not been confirmed.
Georgia Power Co. spokeswoman Lynn Wallace says some 5,700 customers remained without power Wednesday morning. Of that number, 3,800 were in Milledgeville in middle Georgia, with 1,900 customers out in Canton in Cherokee County.
Robby Westbrook, director of the county's office of emergency management, issued a statement saying many roads were blocked by fallen trees in an area south of Canton, about 30 miles north of Atlanta.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The Central Georgia Electric Membership Corp. said it had 1,702 of its 49,000 customers out of power in five of the nine counties it serves — Butts, Henry, Jasper, Morgan and Spalding.
Spokeswoman Christy Chewning said early Wednesday that only one Henry County customer remained without power.
