Man Dies After Private Plane Crashes in Tennessee

A man who was injured in a private plane crash Sunday afternoon at Memphis International Airport has died.

The Regional Medical Center at Memphis on Monday identified the victim as 57-year-old Emmett O'Ryan. He had been taken to the hospital in critical condition after the single-engine airplane crashed around 4:15 p.m. He died later Sunday.

Family friends told The Commercial Appeal that O'Ryan's son and daughter and a friend of O'Ryan's son were injured in the crash. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The plane, which was flying from Lewisburg, W.Va., approached the airport from the north and slammed into a low abutment in front of a runway used by FedEx aircraft. The plane then caught fire.

Federal officials have begun an investigation of the crash.
