LOS ANGELES – At least five people were injured today when a Los Angeles commuter train burst into flames after hitting a car on the tracks.
The accident came during morning rush hour in the Highland Park area, northeast of Los Angeles.
A fire department spokesman says the Metro Gold Line train was significantly damaged before the fire was put out. He couldn't immediately say whether the injured were in the car or aboard the train.
Televised news reports showed what seemed to be the charred wreckage of a vehicle lying toward the front of the train. A nearby crossing gate had been torn off.
The commuter train line carries passengers between Los Angeles' Chinatown and suburbs east of the city.
