A man in the Metro East community of Wood River admits he blew up his house in an apparent suicide attempt.
Wood River Fire Chief Steve Alexander says the 45-year-old man told authorities he pulled the gas lines from the furnace and water heater Friday, then waited for the fumes to build up before lighting a disposable lighter.
The ensuing explosion blew off one side of the house, shattered the home's windows and sent debris flying. Residents living blocks away say they felt the blast.

The man was treated at a hospital and released.
Wood River Deputy Police Chief Otis Stewart says authorities likely will present the case to prosecutors later this week for consideration of charges.
