LONDON – British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is backing Tony Blair's candidacy for president of the European Union.
He says he would be "very happy" to support Blair if the former prime minister decides he wants the soon-to-be-created post.
Brown offered his endorsement in Parliament on Wednesday before an EU summit later this week which is expected to discuss the matter. Blair is the most prominent politician being discussed for the job but his candidacy faces opposition from leaders of Britain's Conservative Party.
He has received qualified support from some European leaders but many are not yet committed.
The new post will be created when the long-delayed Lisbon Treaty is ratified.
