A 17-year-old Australian girl has won the right to have her breasts surgically removed so that she can better resemble a boy, it was reported.

The teenager, only referred to as Alex, applied to the Family Court for permission to undergo a double mastectomy to make it easier for her to pass as a male, Agence-France Presse reported Monday.

The teenager, who was diagnosed with “gender identity dysphoria,” had been taking hormones to prevent menstruation since 2004, according to the report.

Court chief justice Diana Bryant said the court decided to allow the breast removal because evidence from medical experts, Alex's counselor and an independent children's lawyer "overwhelmingly" backed the move.
