Florida Boy Scout, 17, Dies During 7.7-Mile Hike

Officials say a Weston teenager died while hiking the Florida Trail with a Boy Scouts troop this weekend.

Collier County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Natalie Felber says 17-year-old Michael Abelman died Saturday during a hike in the Big Cypress National Preserve.

Felber says authorities are investigating, but it appears Abelman's death was caused by medical problem.

The group was hiking about five miles from a ranger station.

The Florida Trail is a 7.7-mile trek located in South Florida that takes hikers through cypress strands and sloughs.
