MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino woman who said she was raped by a U.S. Marine sobbed as she testified Thursday that she wants to kill him and the three servicemen who allegedly encouraged him.
The 22-year-old woman said a psychiatrist had been counseling her on how to cope with trauma since March, four months after the alleged rape.
"I want to kill them," she testified. "If it is allowed, I would be the one to kill them. They have no respect. They think they can have their way with all the women here."
Prosecutors say Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith, 21, of St. Louis, raped the woman Nov. 1 after a night of drinking. The defense says she and Smith had consensual sex.
The three other Marines, Lance Cpl. Keith Silkwood, Lance Cpl. Dominic Duplantis and Staff Sgt. Chad Carpentier, are charged in the case for allegedly cheering Smith on.
If convicted, all four face up to 40 years in prison.
In her third appearance on the witness stand, the woman testified she had not returned to her southern hometown of Zamboanga because "I am ashamed."
"I don't know what to tell my friends and I don't know how they will react," she said. "I no longer mingle with other people because I am afraid this might happen again."
Her sobbing interrupted her testimony several times until the judge ordered a recess.
In a fit of anger during her appearance Monday, the woman hit Smith with her fists and handbag as she headed toward the witness stand.
The judge scolded both sides and ordered a change in the seating arrangement to prevent a repeat.
