Charles, Camilla on First Royal Engagement
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Prince Charles (search) and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, broke off from their honeymoon Thursday to carry out their first royal engagement as a married couple — opening a playground.
The royal couple, who carry the titles Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, were met by cheering crowds when they arrived at Monaltrie Park in Ballater, near the royal estate of Balmoral.
The former Camilla Parker Bowles (search) wore a pink coat with tartan trim and shawl while the heir to the throne sported traditional Highland dress, including a kilt.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The duchess received flowers from local schoolgirl Kerry Sinclair before cutting the tartan ribbon to open the park — her first official public duty as a member of the royal family.
"I was very nervous and excited, but it was great to meet them both," Kerry said.
The royal couple were shown around the new facilities by the chairman of the Ballater Charitable Chiels fundraising group, John Pringle.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}They met local lawmakers and police and stopped to chat with some of the pupils from the local school, who had been allowed out of classes to try out the new park.
The couple, who were married at a civil ceremony Saturday at Windsor, west of London, are honeymooning at Birkhall, Charles's home on the Balmoral estate.
