Charity Organizes Aid for Animals

An international animal welfare charity said Thursday it was sending animal feed and vets to help care for starving and sick animals in tsunami-affected areas of Asia.

The London-based World Society for the Protection of Animals (search) said the Dec. 26 earthquake and tidal waves left many dogs, cats and farm animals diseased and without food and water.

The WSPA, which is coordinating a relief effort (search) by several animal welfare organizations, has already shipped animal feed and veterinary supplies to the region and will also send vets.

The group said they were concerned about a possible outbreak of disease in Asian animal populations and would monitor the need for vaccination programs.
