MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A thief drove off with an infant in the back seat of a stolen car Tuesday, but the child was rescued by his mother and an off-duty police officer.
Eighteen-year-old Whitney Jones stopped at a service station to put air in one of her car tires when the thief jumped in the vehicle with her 11-month-old son, Cameron, in the back seat.
Jason Redding, an off-duty Memphis police officer, witnessed the incident and the mother joined him in his pickup truck as he pursued the carjacker.
After a short chase, the thief stopped the car, jumped out and fled on foot. The infant, still in his car seat, was unharmed.
The suspect remained at large.
