BOGOTA, Colombia – Five people were killed when a cargo plane crashed as it approached an airport in Colombia's Amazon region, aviation authorities said Sunday.
The victims were the four crew members and a passenger. Colombia's civil aviation authority said the Aerosucre plane went down after striking a telephone tower as it descended to land on Saturday evening near the city of Leticia, close to the border with Brazil and Peru.
The agency said it will investigate the cause of the accident, but preliminary findings suggest heavy clouds and low visibility may have been responsible.
