It was his third season with Dallas following stops with Toronto, New Jersey, Orlando and Phoenix. Carter has averaged 20.2 points in 1,148 NBA games.
He hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to win a first-round playoff game against San Antonio on April 26, but the Mavericks were ousted in seven games by the eventual NBA champions.
An eight-time All-Star, Carter is 25th all-time in NBA history with 23,190 points and is seventh in 3-pointers made with 1,809. The North Carolina product was also the NBA's Rookie of the Year for the 1998-99 season with the Raptors.
