US women take early lead in Curtis Cup

The United States has dominated the early play at the Curtis Cup, winning all three opening-round foursomes against Britain and Ireland on day one of the competition Friday.

The duo of Austin Ernst and Brooke Pancake set the tone for the three-day amateur event, rallying to win the first match 1 up against Kelly Tidy and Amy Boulden in cold, windy and overcast conditions at the Nairn Golf Club course in northern Scotland.

Amy Anderson and Tiffany Lua combined to win 2 and 1 against Holly Clyburn and Bronte Law.

But the upset of the opener of the 37th edition of the biennial Curtis Cup came when the Irish pair of Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow was dealt a 5 and 4 loss by Lindy Duncan and Lisa McCloskey.

Maguire and Meadows were 6 down after nine holes and while they won the 11th and 12th they conceded defeat at the 14th.

The U.S. has won the last seven Curtis Cups.
