Twins activate Walters, bring up Vasquez

The Minnesota Twins activated pitcher P.J. Walters from the 60-day disabled list on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, the team selected the contract of pitcher Esmerling Vasquez from Triple-A Rochester and he will made the first start of his career in Sunday's series finale against the Royals.

The Twins lost the game, 6-4, as Vasquez was charged with five runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Walters was 2-2 with a 5.40 earned run average in seven starts before going on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation. He was transferred to the 60- day DL on July 28.

Vasquez played in 31 games with Rochester this season, starting eight games for the Red Wings. He went 9-6 with a 2.78 ERA.

He spent three seasons with the Diamondbacks and was 5-10 with a 4.66 ERA in 141 games and was claimed off waivers by Minnesota last September.
