Tallahassee Regional: Day One

The third-seed Troy Trojans scored all their runs during a fourth-inning rally to pull off a surprising 5-2 victory over the second-seed Alabama Crimson Tide to kick off the Tallahassee Regional of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Logan Pierce led off the fourth inning with a double and then after Danny Collins walked, Trae Santos launched a three-run home run to left field for Troy (41-18). Ali Knowles would add a two-run single later in the inning which was enough for Shane McCain who went 6 2/3 innings and struck out six batters while allowing two runs to earn the victory. Tanner Hicks got the final out in the ninth inning to collect the save.
Alabama (34-27) had just seven total hits in the contest with Brett Booth (2- for-4) the only player on the roster to record a multi-hit game. Austen Smith was 1-for-4 with his one hit a solo home run. Charley Sullivan took the loss after lasting just 3 1/3 innings and allowing five runs, four of which were earned.

In the night-cap of the regional the host and top-seed Florida State Seminoles routed the fourth-seed Savannah State Tigers, 10-0, to move on to the winner's bracket.
The Seminoles (45-15) scored all 10 runs in the first three innings behind big offensive games from D.J. Stewart (3-for-4, 3 RBI), Marcus Davis (3-for-4, 4 RBI) and Stephen McGee (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI). Scott Sitz pitched a stellar game to grab the win as he scattered seven hits over 7 1/3 innings while striking out eight batters.
Savannah State (33-22) starter Kyle McGowin allowed all 10 Florida State runs on nine hits and six walks over five innings of work. Mendez Elder was 2-for-4 with a double as the only player for the Tigers with a multi-hit game.

On Saturday Alabama and Savannah State will meet up in the loser's bracket while Florida State and Troy will play in the winner's bracket. The winner of the Alabama/Savannah State contest will face the loser between Florida State and Troy on Sunday for a spot in the regional final. The loser of the Alabama/Savannah State contest on Saturday will be eliminated from the tournament.
