Swansea makes winning start in Europa League

Swansea City made a winning start to its Europa League campaign on Thursday by running out to a 3-0 defeat of 10-man Valencia at the Mestalla.

The home side went down to 10 men just 10 minutes into the match when Adil Rami was sent off for bringing down Wilfried Bony to deny Swansea a scoring opportunity.

The Swans were unable to convert from the ensuing free kick, but they did manage to break the deadlock just four minutes later when Michu's centering pass was met by Bony, who connected with a shot that needed a deflection to get by goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Valencia stayed within touching distance of Swansea until the 58th minute when a well-worked move around the box was finished off by Michu firing home a brilliant through ball from Pozuelo.

The dagger for Valencia came in the 62nd minute when Jonathan De Guzman curled home a perfect free kick, placed perfectly in the upper corner.
