Red Sox reliever Miller heads to DL

The Boston Red Sox placed pitcher Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a left foot sprain the reliever sustained in the previous night's games against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Miller tripped while attempting to cover home plate after giving up a single to the Angels' J.B. Shuck during the seventh inning of Boston's 9-7, 11-inning loss. The left-hander was taken to an area hospital for x-rays, which revealed the sprain.

The 6-foot-7 southpaw has been a key bullpen member for the current AL East leaders. Through 37 appearances this season, Miller has posted a 2.64 earned run average and struck out 48 batters in just 30 2/3 innings.

Boston recalled veteran Alfredo Aceves from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. The versatile right-hander led the Red Sox with 25 saves in 2012, and has compiled a 4-1 record with a 5.05 ERA over six starts and three relief outings during his time in the majors this season.
