Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz lost an appeal of a one-game suspension and will serve it Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The suspension was handed down April 21 and stemmed from an incident on April 19 when Ortiz made contact with an umpire in a game against Baltimore.
In the fifth inning of the loss to the Orioles, Ortiz disagreed with a check swing call made by third base umpire Jerry Meals on a 1-1 pitch. He dropped his bat and threw his arms in the air before beginning to argue.
Home plate umpire John Tumpane intervened and ejected Ortiz, and the slugger made contact with Tumpane after being ejected.
Ortiz is batting .242 with four homers and 12 RBI in 26 games this season.
