Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia is expected to miss at least the next 10 days after being diagnosed with posterior elbow inflammation,
Mejia was set to close out Monday's 3-1 win over the Nationals in Washington, but instead was taken to the clubhouse with the team's trainer for evaluation. He underwent an x-ray and MRI which revealed the extent of the damage.
Buddy Carlyle eventually earned the save for Bartolo Colon by retiring the final two batters.
Mejia, 25, finished last season with a 6-6 record and 3.65 earned run average in 63 appearances, which included 28 saves.
Just one game into the 2015 season, New York is already behind the eight-ball due to injuries to its pitching staff. Closer Bobby Parnell is not yet ready to return from Tommy John surgery, while Vic Black (shoulder), Josh Edgin and Zach Wheeler (TJ surgeries) all began the season on the disabled list.
Wheeler and Edgin are expected to miss all of this year while rehabbing.
