Mets end seasons of Davis, Rice
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The New York Mets have shut down first baseman Ike Davis and reliever Scott Rice for the remainder of the season, placing both players on the 60-day disabled list Monday.
Davis has been sidelined since Aug. 31 with an oblique strain, while Rice is dealing with a sports hernia and last pitched on Tuesday.
The move puts an end to a disappointing 2013 campaign for Davis, who led the Mets with 32 homers while knocking in a career-best 90 runs last year. The 26- year-old hit just .205 with nine homers and 33 RBI over 103 games this season, however, and spent nearly a month in the minors while struggling badly at the plate.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Rice made the Mets out of spring training as a 31-year-old rookie and has pitched in a team-high 73 games, posting a 4-5 record with a 3.71 ERA.
In addition, New York called up three players from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to Monday's game against Washington, including veteran pitcher Aaron Harang. The journeyman right-hander is slated to start Thursday versus the Nationals.
The Mets also recalled outfielder Mike Baxter and purchased the contract of Juan Centeno from the 51s.
