MacKinnon scores in shootout to help Avalanche beat defending champion Kings, 3-2

Nathan MacKinnon scored the only shootout goal and the Colorado Avalanche beat the defending champion Los Angeles Kings 3-2 Saturday night in the teams' preseason finale.

Dennis Everberg and Matt Duchene scored in regulation for the Avalanche (1-5-2), and Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 shots.

Tyler Toffoli scored twice for the Kings (5-0-2) and Jonathan Quick finished with 27 saves.

Toffoli scored 3:09 apart in the second period to put Los Angeles up 2-0 about five minutes in.

Everberg beat Quick in front of the net at 8:46, and Duchene tied at 5:47 of the third period.

Los Angeles will open the regular season against San Jose on Wednesday night and raise their 2014 Stanley Cup banner at Staples Center. Colorado opens at Minnesota on Thursday night.
