IndyCar series appears to be on verge of hiring Derrick Walker to help with competition

The IndyCar Series appears to be on verge of hiring Derrick Walker in its competition division.

Mark Miles, the new head of IndyCar owner Hulman & Co., said Friday he hopes to have an announcement next week. A few minutes later, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti, who like Walker is Scottish, told The Associated Press that Walker had been hired last week.

Walker reportedly signed a contract during the series' stop in Brazil last week, something Miles denied then and again Friday.

Walker, 68, has long ties to open-wheel racing. He is a former team owner and has been the general manager for Ed Carpenter Racing this season. Carpenter is the stepson of former Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO and IndyCar founder Tony George.
